New Dental Practice Buildouts & Low-Voltage Cabling in the Pacific Northwest

Opening a dental practice comes with one deadline that never moves: opening day, with patients already on the schedule. Between now and then, your network, your operatory technology, your imaging, and your practice management software all have to be planned, wired, and working together as one system. The single most common mistake we see is treating IT as the last step, something to sort out once the space is built. By then the walls are closed, the cabling routes are set, and the choices that should have been deliberate have already been made for you. The best time to bring us in is the moment you choose your contractor, because your data connections and low-voltage runs need to be designed before construction covers them up.

We have specialized in dental practices across the Pacific Northwest, and only dental practices, since 1998, and we are an employee-owned company based in Portland. That focus matters more than it might sound. A general IT contractor who wires offices and retail spaces has probably never configured a dental operatory, never migrated a practice management database, and never had to make an imaging sensor talk to charting software on a deadline. We do this work regularly, and it is all we do. When you bring us in early, we work right alongside your contractor, your equipment supplier, and your designer so that everything from the cabling in the walls to the computer on the front desk is right the first time. The end goal is always a happy client!

What a buildout with DSI includes

Here is what a buildout with DSI actually includes. When you are building new, we start by planning every data connection with your contractor ahead of construction, so the network is designed around how your practice will actually run rather than around wherever it was convenient to drop a cable. We handle the low-voltage side of the project as well, including audiovisual, sound, phone, and camera, hard wired communication and security systems, so you are coordinating one provider for the technology instead of refereeing three.  We position your computers and operatory technology deliberately, in the places that make your team’s day flow, not the places the wiring happened to reach. And we install and integrate the dental practice management and imaging systems you depend on, configuring them so they work seamlessly together from the first patient on day one instead of fighting each other for months afterward.

If you are acquiring an existing practice rather than building from scratch, the approach changes and we change with it. We work with whatever systems and computer suppliers are already in place. We know how to fix things and make existing equipment work, which means we will not walk in and insist you rip out and replace hardware that is doing its job perfectly well. That is your money, and we treat it that way. We work within your budget and your timeline to make sure your vision for the practice matches the final result.

Operatory ergonomics

There is one part of a buildout that most IT companies never think about, and it is one we take seriously: how the space feels to work in all day, every day, for years. Your comfort and your operatory’s functionality are the lifeblood of your practice. As an official reseller for ICW ergonomic equipment, we specialize in ergonomic solutions for new buildouts and remodels, and for the front desk area too. We design work areas that help you and your staff avoid the repetitive motion injuries and the awkward Class 4 reaching movements that come from a room laid out around the equipment instead of around the people using it. On the plans it looks like a small detail. Three years into a busy practice, it is the difference between a team that finishes the day comfortable and one that does not.

Business-grade hardware that lasts

We also stand behind the hardware we put in your practice. DSI is an official reseller of Equus computer systems, one of the country’s most respected white-box providers. These are business-grade machines, not the consumer-grade boxes you would pick up at a big-box store, built with quality components and bench-tested for reliability before they ever reach your office. We customize each system with your practice’s specific needs in mind, and they typically last an average of five to seven years, which is a meaningful stretch longer than the throwaway hardware a lot of offices end up replacing every couple of years. We provide secure mobile technology solutions as well, for the parts of your practice that are not tied to a desk.

When to bring us in

Timing is worth planning around. As soon as you know who your contractor is, get us into the conversation. If you are not planning major system changes, we generally need at least two to three weeks to do the low-voltage work properly. If you are customizing your operatories, plan on at least six weeks, because that customization and the low-voltage design behind it drive the timeline. Bringing us in early is the whole game. It is what lets us plan the layout deliberately instead of scrambling to work around decisions that are already set in concrete.

As for cost, every practice is different in size and scope, so pricing depends on your specific project and whether you are building new or acquiring an existing office. We are not going to put a misleading number on a web page that has nothing to do with your actual practice. The best next step is a short conversation. Tell us about your practice and your timeline, and we will walk you through exactly how we would approach it.

What it costs

Sequencing matters more than new practice owners often expect. The low-voltage cabling, the network drops, the locations of your servers and workstations, these are decisions that become permanent the moment drywall goes up. Moving or rerunning a network drop after construction is not a small fix, it means fishing cable through a finished wall and potentially running a longer cable in order to get to the area to place the drop. Planning it correctly the first time costs almost nothing extra; correcting it later costs real money and real delay you cannot afford with an opening date on the calendar.  This is the entire argument for bringing us in at the contractor stage rather than after.
